Opening ceremony
Mr. President, Rodrigo de Mesa Ruiz,
Honored guests, dear shooters and officials,

The European Championships we are opening tonight is a highlight in a significant year of international shooting sport.
It is very wisely said: "History is a systematic account of the origin and progress of the World, of a nation, of an institution or of an organization."
Organized shooting competitions can, in some of our member federations, be traced back to the 14th century, but the modern concept of international competitions began in the 19th, when several of our present day national federations were formed. Just after the turn of the century an international federation for sport shooting, the UIT, was developed and the inaugural meeting took place in Zürich on 17th July 1907, accordingly a hundred years ago, a week from today.
We, the privileged representatives of European shooting sport will have the opportunity of celebrating the 100 years anniversary of the present ISSF by participating in these exciting Championships at the modern, beautiful shooting range, Juan Carlos I.
I am curtain that the organizer, participants, spectators and officials will see to that the Championships has a quality worthy such a venerable and vigorous centenarian. 1500 participating shooters, excellent results, new records and many more shooters qualified for the Olympic Games will be the proof.
Friendly competitions demand however today, as a hundred year ago, tremendous efforts and hard work by the Organizer. All having been involved know what it demands of work, renunciation and satisfaction. It is therefore a pleasure for me, on behalf of the Presidium of the European Shooting Confederation, to express my most sincere thanks to the Royal Spanish Shooting Federation and the Organizing Committee for their effort to make these very demanding Championships possible.
Likewise, I welcome the shooters, who have come here from all over Europe to demonstrate their skills, fight for titles and ISSF quota places for the Olympic Games in Beijing.
And - We have a surprise for you. For the first time Money prizes will be awarded to the medal winners of the Olympic events. I cannot promise this to be repeated in championships to come, but it is a good beginning!

Good luck, I hope your expectations will be fulfilled.

With these words I declare the European Championships, all events 2007, officially opened.

Unni Nicolaysen
ESC President
