The Final

Kerstin Bodin, ESC Vice President and EYL Northern Group Manager reports from the European Youth League Final in Bologna (ITA) beginning of October this year:

The Youth League is a very special competition for young shooters, 14 to 18 years of age, from all over Europe and during the first weekend in October the Finale in Bologna completed the second year of the league. 15 teams – mixed boys and girls – with 57 shooters from 11 nations came to Italy to compete for the desirable challenge trophy, for the gold, silver and bronze medals and last but not least – for the ESC President’s awards.

The format of the Youth League is an exciting head-to-head competition in 10 shots series where the three team shooters win points for their teams. The teams shot three different matches in two groups on Saturday; the two best teams qualifying for the gold match, while the teams placed three and four qualified for the bronze match. The spectator-friendly medal matches on Sunday were organised as 20 shots, shot by shot finals announcing the results after each shot.

In the pistol event Russia won the gold medals, the challenge trophy and three Scatt training systems, donated by the ESC President Mr Vladimir Lisin. The team of Ukraine came in second and won two Scatt systems and the Italian team placed third, winning one Scatt system. The team from Poland ended in fourth place.

The rifle competition offered exactly the same awards and here the winning team came from Hungary, followed by Italy winning the silver medals, Croatia in third place and Serbia placing fourth. The results of all matches can be found on the ESC website.

The Italian member federation Tiro a Segno and its President Ernfried Obrist offered excellently organised competitions in a friendly and warm atmosphere in the shooting centre of Bologna, the same venue where the European Junior Championships will take place in 2012. The shooters and coaches also enjoyed a very nice evening together, hosted by the Italian federation, offering delicate dishes from the famous Italian cuisine. The qualification rounds for the European Youth League 2011 will start later on this winter and all information can be found on the ESC website in due course.
