A long-lasting, exciting shooting season is calming down and it's time to conclude, and perhaps look to the near future. 2008 has been a magnificent year for European Shooting Sport. The success started with the well-organized 10m Championships in Switzerland, continued with various successful World Cups, spread all over the world, and the promising European Championships for Juniors in Plzen. In Cyprus we experienced a so far climax, which culminated with the splendid Olympic Games in Beijing. In all the three European Championships new World and European records were established and a lot equalized. European shooters are taking the offensive! A total of 390 quota places were distributed for participation in the Olympic Games in Beijing. When all qualification competitions were completed, 206 quotas were in European hands, which means more than 50%. Would the European shooters be able to live up to the expectations? The result lists are showing that more then expectations were met, as more that 50% of the medals went to European shooters! I am extremely pleased and would like to express my most sincere gratitude to shooters, coaches and the national federations! In July next year the General Assembly of ESC will convene in Osijek, just before the opening of the European Championships 25/50/300m and Shotgun. I merely state the fact that the ESC Long Term Activity Plan, approved in 2005 and extended in 2007, is accomplished. The reorganization is completed and Sub Committees appointed. Thanks to our sponsors, Fox Lodge Ltd., Lapua and Walther the financial situation is improved; a Development Office is established in Lausanne, a marketing program is developed and money prizes are awarded to medal winners, Olympic event, in European Championships and 25/300m European Cups. An ESC Youth League is started to meet the challenges in the coming Youth Olympic Games and several ESC Training centers are recognized. Then it is time for enthusiastic people with new, good ideas to take over the helm and continue the progress! Please find the people, promote and support them! As this is the last time I officially send you my Season's Greetings I would like to thank you all for your friendship, support and good collaboration during the years and wish shooters and national federations not only one, but also many prosperous years in favour of our beloved sport. Season's Greetings, Unni Nicolaysen ESC President |
